Maybe you've often wondered what this chenille wool is all about. Admittedly, chenille yarns unfortunately still have a niche existence in the crochet and knitting scene. And that's completely unjustified, as you'll soon read!
But first things first: Chenille (pronounced "sche·nil·ye") means "caterpillar" in French. And that's exactly what the wool looks like: like a fluffy, hairy caterpillar. The yarn was already used as knitting yarn in the 18th century. But the velvety and fluffy-soft yarn became more well-known in the 1970s and 80s thanks to a cult toy: the "magic worm" with eyes that could be moved by a nylon thread.
Loved by fluff lovers and fashionistas
Chenille is now not only used for crocheting and knitting by fluffy lovers, fashionistas and amigurumi fans all over the world. The clothing and furniture industry also uses chenille in the interior sector for the production of pillows, blankets, curtains, drapes, carpets, towels and even clothing.
And the yarn has been enjoying a revival since the 1990s, especially in the fashion world. Due to its high density and the resulting good thermal insulation, chenille wool is perfect as a base for sweaters, jackets or cardigans in cold seasons. But chenille can do so much more!
Chenille wool: impressive properties and variety
The advantages of this fluffy wonder are obvious: versatile, velvety soft, light shimmer, very comfortable to wear, durable, heat-insulating and much more.
Nowadays, chenille wool is made from many different materials, which lead to different usage properties. For our myboshi SAMT, we chose 100% fluffy polyester. With a running length of 100 m and 100 g per XXL ball, you have plenty of scope for creativity and to implement your velvety-soft ideas.
